Athletic

The fitness center at Concordia University Chicago focuses on three components: wellness, academics and Athletics. This unique project, which was built over the existing and outdated pool and bleachers, includes spaces for cardiovascular fitness, resistance training, and athletics conditioning.

The new facility serves the academic programs of the Departments of Human Performance and Athletics, the Concordia University Cougars Athletics Department, and supports the wellness of students and community members. Holabird & Root worked with members of the CUC Athletics Department to specifically tailor the space for its off-season strength and fitness training programs.

In order to achieve these goals, several types of flooring were utilized. Rubber sheet was used at the cardio equipment area; one-inch thick rubber tiles were used at the strength equipment area; indoor rubber backed, nylon turf was used for athletic conditioning; and vinyl composite tiles to match the university logo color were used at the mezzanine check-in, lockers, and stretching area. The indoor turf track can also be used for sprint training and football sled pulling, providing improved training opportunities for the athletic department. Finally, one-inch rubber tiles at the lifting cage drop zones were custom cut and colored with the CUC Cougar logo.
